Firm profile

Hypothesis is a visionary design studio with a unique perspective shaped by graphic design, architecture, photography and fine art.

We believe exceptional design comes from a combination of making and thinking. Our methodology, emphasizing research and experimental ideation, explores the poetic intersection between chaos and order. We are fascinated by moments when unpredictability and chance meet rules and tradition.

Capabilities include print, publication, environment, poster, identity and motion design, as well as strategic consulting. Hypothesis is based in Providence, Rhode Island.

Principals

Anne Jordan holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design and studied language at Brown University. She is especially interested in the structural and elemental qualities of typography, and in how letterforms relate to the natural and manmade world. Anne spends her spare time throwing clay in her ceramics studio, practicing yoga and taking pictures with her collection of medium-format cameras. As a transplanted Midwesterner, she is in awe of the Rhode Island coastline and loves the crashing sound of pebbles rolling in the waves.

Mitch Goldstein holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design and studied architecture at Syracuse University. He is a faculty member of Rhode Island School of Design and Rhode Island College. Mitch is fascinated by expressive typography and experimental image making, and how the two relate to create meaning. When he's not working at Hypothesis, Mitch writes about design and education at mitchgoldstein.com, develops black + white film in his darkroom, and is always on the lookout for a dark comedy or excellent French meal.
