RISD Portfolio Cafe

Identity system including logotype, environmental graphics and menu templates for Rhode Island School of Design's Portfolio Cafe. The cafe acts as a nexus of campus life and a place for the local Providence community to interact with the RISD community. The logotype is a custom version of Avenir that plays with the relationship between figure and ground to connote the overlap of students and public that congregate at the cafe. The name Portfolio was chosen to represent the idea of many parts coming together to form a whole. Cropping the logotype enhances the formal beauty of the typeface and further emphasizes the idea of the cafe as a crossroads. Completed under an extremely tight budget, laser cut vinyl adhesive lettering was used extensively as both pragmatic signage and expressive ornamentation within the space.
